Mercedes-Benz has secured patent protection for an off-road vehicle featuring an unconventional capability: the ability to traverse bodies of water. The design centers on a two-axle SUV that achieves buoyancy through inflatable inserts positioned within the wheel arches, a system that would allow the vehicle to stay afloat when needed.
The technology goes beyond simple buoyancy. The vehicle relies on wheel-based propulsion to move through water, with the wheels themselves serving as the primary means of locomotion once the craft becomes amphibious. This approach differs from traditional amphibious vehicle designs that employ separate water propulsion systems.
Software plays a critical role in the system's operation. Computerized stability controls would manage the vehicle's behavior on water, maintaining equilibrium and preventing capsizing or uncontrolled movement.
